SUMMARY:Ultimate Desert SW Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us on our Ultimate Desert SW photo workshop to experience the incredible beauty of the desert landscape. In conjunction with John Pedersen\, we are offering this workshop for the 20th year\, and every year brings us different conditions\, light and most of all experiences to last a lifetime.  \nWe strive to provide a richer and more rewarding experience than any other workshop or if you visited on your own and our ultimate desert SW workshop is designed to provide that.  Our years of experience\, plus our Navajo guides\, will ensure that we get to the right places at the right times for the most memorable photographic opportunities.  We will visit iconic locations as well as many locations not widely known.  Plus\, our guides will be able to get us to locations few have access to! \nWe are adding two additional days to our normal workshop this year to provide you ample time and space to absorb this beautiful area as well as work to craft compelling images. We will have an additional day in the Monument Valley area to explore the icons and lesser known\, but equally beautiful areas.  After we transition Canyon de Chelley\, we will have TWO DAYS in the canyon because this area is more amazing than what we can capture in one day alone.  \nApril is a fantastic time to be in the valley as the foliage is a vibrant green which contrasts against the red rock and sand.  The temperatures are milder and there is a good chance for drama in the skies. September is the best time to be in this part of the world — the summer crowds are gone and the temperatures are very comfortable out in the field. Seeing a sunrise from Hunt’s Mesa is simply amazing!!!   \nMonument Valley is part of the Navajo Nation tribal park\, straddling the border of northeastern Arizona and southeastern Utah on the Colorado Plateau. It preserves the Navajo way of life and some of the most striking and recognizable landscapes of sandstone buttes\, mesas and spires in the entire Southwest. The area is entirely within the Navajo Indian Reservation near the small Indian town of Goulding\, established in 1923 as a trading post\, and now has a comprehensive range of visitor services. \nWorkshop Details\nMonument Valley\nOur ultimate desert SW workshop starts in Monument Valley Utah.  Our base will be at a local hotel which provides all the conveniences we need to stay comfortable for the long days ahead.  We will visit several locations in Monument Valley\, including areas only accessible if you have a Navajo guide to escort you.  We will visit the Totem Pole area\, Suns Eye\, Ear of the Wind as well as spend time with a Navajo family deep in the valley to photograph their hogan and surroundings. \nWe will also visit several other locations throughout the valley\, photographing at different times of day to capture the essence and spirit of this magical desert landscape. \nHunts Mesa\nWhile in the Monument Valley area\, we have a special treat planned for our workshop. We will meet our Navajo Guides and travel from the hotel to the top of Hunts Mesa.  We will camp out on top of the Mesa\, with everything provided for you!  Tents will be set up with cots and blankets for sleeping and that evening we will enjoy a wonderful camp dinner prepared for us.  We will photograph the sunset from on top the Mesa and after dinner and the sun goes down\, the night sky will erupt with thousands of stars visible making for some outstanding night photography.  After a nights rest\, we will arise before the sun and get in position to capture sunrise from the top of the Mesa looking down to the desert floor and landscape features.  A truly memorable experience!  After a prepared breakfast\, we will make the drive back to our hotel to regroup and continue photographing the area.  The drive is via 4WD vehicles over rough terrain and some say this is the best part of the experience!  For a video of the drive\, click HERE.  \nCanyon de Chelley\nAfter Monument Valley\, we will travel on our own to Chinle AZ to check in to our next hotel near the canyon.  After getting settled\, we will spend the remainder of the day photographing at various locations around the area.  The next morning\, we will meet our guides for an all-day trip in to Canyon de Chelley.  We will travel through sacred lands to rarely photographed locations deep inside the canyon.  We have specific locations we recommend to photograph such as White House Ruins\, but are also always open to the conditions and environment and may visit other more memorable locations within the canyon.  Having an exclusive guide who lives here affords us unique access to the canyon as well as an intimate knowledge of the landscape and providing the best vantage points for our photographic goals.  The first day in the canyon you will be amazed at the towering rock walls and the vast amount of ruins and petroglyphs and at times it can simply be overwhelming. So\, after a night decompressing at our hotel\, we will spend a second day deep in the canyon really working to come away with artistic interpretations of our impressions and experiences.  One day is simply not enough\, that is why we’ve added a second day on this Ultimate Desert SW Workshop! \nA box lunch will be provided during our days in the canyon.  More details on the itinerary and menu options will be provided after registration. \nAfter the last day in the canyon\, we will return to the hotel and the workshop will end.  Because it will be late in the day\, we recommend to spend the night in Chinle before traveling home. \nThe price for all Navajo guides\, Hunt’s Mesa overnight and location admittance are included. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \nThis Ultimate Desert SW workshop is truly an memorable experience.  More than just photography\, it is guaranteed to be an immersive and varied experience that you will remember for a lifetime. \n  \n  \nPurchase & RegistrationWorkshop Purchase and Registration is transacted through JohnPedersenPhoto.com \nCheck out a teaser video below from past workshops! \n  \nFitness Level: Easy/Moderate \n\n– Most photo locations are near the vehicle and do not require much walking\n– We will have short walks over un-even terrain to get to the best vantage points\n– The ground on Hunts Mesa is uneven rock/sand so if you are unstable\, please bear this in mind\n– Hunts Mesa is over 6300′ high.  Those coming from sea level may notice the altitude\n– At each location\, you can stay near the vehicles or walk amongst the landscape.  Be aware that these are wild lands with uneven terrain \n\nLogistics\nThe closest airports to our workshop start in Monument Valley are Phoenix or Albequerque both roughly 5 hours drive away.  You may be able to fly in closer to a smaller airport.  You will need a rental car to travel to the workshop start and during the workshop (though we try and carpool as much as possible). When we visit Hunts Mesa and Canyon de Chelley\, transportation will be provided by our Navajo guides.  Our workshop will end in Chinle Arizona. \n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\nGuide & Permit Fees\nTravel to/from/during workshop\n\n\nTransportation during guided outings\nLodging\n\n\nMeals on Hunts Mesa & Canyon de Chelley\nMost Meals\n\n\nCamping Gear on Hunts Mesa\nTips/Gifts\n\n\nExpert instruction by two photographers\n

SUMMARY:The Hidden Palouse
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Palouse – Exploring areas beyond the beaten path and capturing the subtlety and nuance of this amazing area\nMyself and John Pedersen will once again be offering an amazing workshop in the beautiful Palouse region of Eastern Washington.  Jack and I have over 30 years experience leading groups across this landscape and we know the hidden gems of this amazing landscape.  For 2025\, we will be focusing our vision on the hidden gems of the area\, from landscapes\, small towns and Americana and abstracts. \nToo often people are focused on just a couple of famous locations in the Palouse\, Steptoe Butte being one of them.  NOTICE:  Steptoe Butte will be closed during this time for important repairs to the road and park\, however\, there is SO MUCH MORE to the Palouse than Steptoe Butte. We will spend time moving beyond the obvious and draw out the subtle nuances of the rolling landscape and the storytelling possible in the various small towns in the area.  The rolling hills of wheat\, barley\, lentils and canola with the addition of spring wildflowers and country roads punctuated with over 100-year-old year old barns lends itself to a photographer’s paradise. The subject matter is endless. The Palouse area is located in Southeastern Washington where the major towns are Pullman\, Washington and Moscow\, Idaho. We will base our Palouse photo workshop out of the small town of Colfax\, which is central to everything we want to photograph. The Palouse is fairly remote. It’s not a tourist destination but during the spring and summer there are usually many photographers. \nThe Palouse can challenge all photographers to create compelling compositions amidst the rolling hills and country settings.  Various shades of greens offset the blue skies with trees dotting the landscapes.  It offers such a wide range of photographic subjects and compositional possibilities! Everything from wide angle landscapes\, to intimate nature scenes\, abstracts and Americana.  We will guide you to the best locations in the area and provide as much in-field guidance as you want or need.  Our focus will be on the the hidden areas of the Palouse\, learning to “see” the area and working to create compelling compositions and capture them in our cameras. \nPreparation and being in the right mindset can help you achieve better results. Before the workshop begins\, we will send you several updates so you can better prepare for the conditions and environment.  Also\, please read this helpful article on how to prepare for one of our photo workshops. \n  \nWORKSHOP DETAILS\nThis workshop typically sells out early and often has a waiting list. This is not a physically taxing or strenuous workshop since most locations are on paths or along the roadside\, though the days are long in the Palouse. \nJune is prime time for the rolling fields of different shades of green. The Palouse is a great area to develop photographic skills because light and pattern considerations are incredibly important here. The aim is to make images that portray depth\, surprise and drama\, while using leading lines\, foregrounds and other graphic elements. I will warn you\, photography in this area isn’t as easy as you may think\, but that also makes it one of the best places to take your skills to the next level. Few people have visit The Palouse which means there are few photographic icons. This also means that personal vision becomes incredibly important. \nEXTRA ADDED ATTRACTION (not officially part of our workshop!): We’ll be heading north of Colfax by about 45 minutes on the morning the day before the workshop begins (around 8 am)\, going up to Sprague\, Washington to photograph the old trucks in Dave’s Old Truck Rescue. You are welcome to tag along. I’ll be returning to Colfax around noon. Please let us know if you are joining us. If you are\, please arrive in Colfax the day before. There is no extra charge for this excursion. \nThank you for your interest in this workshop. Once you have registered\, information about what to bring\, such as weather\, itinerary locations\, etc. will begin to flow to you about 3-4 weeks before the event. \n\nPLEASE NOTE: This workshop is part of the Photograph the Pacific Northwest series\, a collaboration between Jack Graham and John Pedersen to highlight the magnificent beauty of the PNW through in-depth workshops at some of the most iconic and beautiful locations. \n\nPURCHASE WORKSHOP & REGISTRATIONWorkshop Purchase and Registration is transacted through JohnPedersenPhoto.com \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s Included\nWhat’s Not Included\n\n\n\n\nExpert Guiding (22+ years experience in the Palouse)\nTravel to and from workshop\, during workshop\n\n\nIn-Field Photographic Instruction\nLodging\n\n\nClassroom Instruction\nMeals\n\n\nPost Workshop syllabus and support\n \n\n\nGood times and new friends!\n

SUMMARY:Bears of Katmai N.P.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime photo workshop photographing the bears of Katmai N.P.. You won’t want to miss this incredible experience photographing grizzly bears in their natural habitat along with other Northern wildlife\, all in the beauty of the Fall colors. \nWe will be assisted by the best guides in the region and go to areas few others ever travel to. This wilderness area is sparsely populated. The bears rule the land here and humans have adapted to respect the bears for what they are. As a result\, the bears have little fear of humans since they are the kings in this wilderness. We will be in the ultimate location for the amazing experience of photographing these marvelous animals as they dive into the ocean and rivers to catch plentiful sockeye salmon. In addition to the mighty grizzly bears\, we have the chance to see wolves hunting and foraging as well as possible side trips to see walrus colonies. This really is the trip to photograph the Ultimate Alaskan Bears. \nWe will photograph the bears of Katmai N.P. on the inland streams and tundra accessed via floatplane each day.  We may also have the chance to photograph the bears at the famous Brooks Falls\, where the bears wait on top of the falls for the salmon to launch themselves over the falls. \nWe will stay in a wonderful lodge along Lake Iliamna and enjoy home cooked meals for breakfast and dinner. Lunches will be provided to us each day to eat in the field. The itinerary for each day will be specifically catered to us and our photographic priorities and we will be flown into the Alaskan wilderness by float plane (we have the best and most experienced pilots with us) and guided to the best locations.   Note:  the ability to fly and which locations are accessible are weather dependent and during the Fall there is more likelihood for weather delays. \n Here is the video from our 2022 workshop \n\n  \nWe are limiting this trip to a small group of attendees. Accommodations are double occupancy only in private cabins. Breakfast and dinner is shared at the lodge (the food is great!). Box lunches are provided to us when we are in the field.  If the workshop appears sold out on the website\, please contact us to inquire about attending.  \nEach evening we’ll download our images and provide comprehensive discussions regarding composition\, seeing images and the formulation of artful photography. In addition to getting you to the right locations\, we’ll make sure your photographic skills are developed as well.  While at our locations\, we’ll help you both technically\, developing proper field techniques and artistically\, to help bring out your best creative photography.  \nUpon registration you’ll receive a complete PDF file containing everything you need to know concerning lodging\, transportation\, etc. for this once in a lifetime experience.   \nTravel to Iliamna and any lodging before or after the workshop are the responsibility of the attendee.  All lodging\, meals and transportation during the workshop are included in the workshop cost. \nACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate.  The activity level for this workshop is moderate with possible field locations that may involve hiking over uneven ground to the photography location or riding on rafts through gentle rivers amongst the bears\, climbing in and out of the boats. Waders and Boots are provided and included in the workshop cost.  Please be aware of this activity level before registering. If you have questions regarding your ability to be part of this experience in Alaska\, please contact my office. \nClick here if you want to know what we’ll be working on\, and click here for general information on what to bring. \n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n  \nPURCHASE WORKSHOP & REGISTRATION

At this time of year\, the Christmas decorations are up but the crowds haven’t arrived yet and it’s a perfect time for a photo workshop! \nExperience the Tetons on this amazing winter photo workshop! We will spend 3 ½ days exploring Teton National Park in winter. The snow-capped mountains of the Grand Teton range will be visible from the famous Snake River locations we’ll photograph from. SUMMARY:Springtime In The Palouse Photo Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest and consideration in our photography workshop in the beautiful Palouse region of Eastern Washington. \nEach season brings different photographic opportunities. Most photographers visit the Palouse from mid-May through September. June is primetime for the lush greens that are so dominant in this area. In the springtime\, endless\, rolling fields of different shades of green abound. Early to late June the patterns of the green fields along with the red barns make for a truly remarkable photographic experience. \n  \nThe Palouse region offers great locations to work on photographic skills. Unlike many of our National Parks\, there are few if any “icons” here. During our 3-day photo workshop\, we will be stressing slowing down and simplifying our compositions. Simplicity\, if not minimalism\, often creates powerful images\, especially in this location. Our locations have been selected over the many years of photography of the region as well as leading Photographic workshops in the Palouse. Most are not on the maps but offer great experiences and superb image potential. \nWe will base our workshop in Colfax\, WA\, about an hour’s drive south of Spokane. photographing the landscapes and culture of the area. We will spend time doing some image reviews and information sessions as time permits. \nPlease note that although the workshop starts at sunrise on June 6th\, we will meet at our hotel in Colfax at 6pm on Friday June 5th. to go over itineraries\, travel\, and workshop goals.
