There are 2 things that I (and I bet you, too) have a lot of. One is camera bags. Do you belong to “The Bag of the Month Club”? Seriously, I am in denial.

The second thing is camera accessories. Many of us photographers are accessories junkies, aren’t we!? Someone should start an “Accessory Anonymous” group.

It comes with the wrench !

I am always looking for interesting, reasonably priced “L” Brackets. My latest bracket I’m looking at is one made by a UK based company called “3-Legged Thing”. How did they get the name 3-Legged Thing? I guess it’s because they make a lot of tripods. Tripods … I’ll save that for another day! But those of you who know me know how I feel about tripods. Short story is heavy=good. Just buy the heaviest you want to carry!

I’ve been a Really Right Stuff guy for lots of years. They make great products, however not cheap.

Before I go on about this  3-Legged Thing bracket, allow me to save you all some time. Do not buy cheap brackets on the Internet. There are “L” brackets all over the Internet for $10, $15 and $20. Stay away from them. The manufacturing is usually horrible and the tolerances in design can vary, even between manufacturers.

I received my 3-Legged Thing  “Ellie Short” ( Model is the ELLIE-S_C) bracket the other day from my good friends at OUTDOORPHOTOGEAR.COM. (All they carry is accessories so they can stock more than just about anyone else. Amazon & NYC pricing and instant shipping).

This model costs about $65.00 which is considerably less than RRS so of course I was curious how their build and quality would compare.  (Along with wondering how a company called 3-Legged Thing could exist!). Well, I must tell you I am quite impressed.

This bracket is a well machined piece, very substantial and fits quite neat on my FUJIFILM X-T3. Unlike RRS who makes dedicated brackets for just about every camera, 3-Legged Thing brackets can fit many other cameras as well. What I really liked about this bracket is with it’s dual Arca-Swiss profile sides and symmetrical 1/4″-20 threaded ends enable the vertical axis to be configured in 8 positions, enabling more cable access than ever before. That’s how they can be used on many other cameras (not all, but a lot!). Make sure when you order you get the one that will fit your camera. Some brackets may cover your battery compartment, however overall the access to the areas on the bottom and sides that you may need to access is quite good.

Their two-axis adjustability is quite ingenious.

Nice rubber inserts to insure a firm grip (non slip)

3-Legged Thing offers two sizes:  standard (for bigger DSLRS) and short for most mirrorless cameras. Both come in Orange and Gray.

Bottom line: No bracket is perfect. However, if you are looking to save perhaps as much as $100.00 consider the 3-Legged Thing  brackets. Again, you can order these for immediate shipment at OUTDOORPHOTOGEAR.COM.

Disclaimer. I am not sponsored by 3-Legged Thing and honestly have never met the folks.  They look like a good company, concerned with quality at a reasonable price. I just see this as a cost-effective alternative to much high-priced brackets out there! -JG
